Run from the Fuzz and Avoid the Slammer
So I received this email a couple days ago.
I was and am absolutely appalled at this email; at first, I thought it was a joke. But there are other legitimate vacation offers within the email. I decided to write Kayak a letter. I expressed to them my disgust at their ability to exploit something that is not 'fun', and doesn't end in drinks at a hotel relaxing for many individuals/families/children/elderly people who try to get into this country by 'border jumping'.
Whether you agree or not with illegal immigration is irrelevant. What should piss you off is that someone finds it 'funny' enough to create a fucking *vacation package* out of it. What does this say about that company? Or the people who participate in the 'tour' as guides? Or the people who *take* the fucking tour? It says to me that they're out to make a buck by making light of something that ends in death for many of these people.
My dad is Mexican. My brother and sister are bi-racial. Much of my dad's family still lives in Mexico. My father's parents busted their asses to become citizens and raise his brothers and sisters here. We have traveled to Mexico to learn about the country and the culture and history. I grew up hearing ignorant neighbors calling my sister and brother racial slurs. I have picketed my father's place of employment for some stupid twat who called him a racial slur and was going to be promoted and become his supervisor (she subsequently left the day I picketed and never came back). I have seen and heard my fair share of ignorance from people in regards to disrespectful words and actions. This vacation 'deal' really takes the cake.
After writing the letter to the company, I got the generic auto-response:Thanks for your feedback
Hello, I'm the CEO and Co-founder of Kayak.
We're a new company with big aspirations. Simply put, we want to help people find and navigate the wealth of travel information that's available on the web.
I personally read every email we receive from consumers like you. Why? Because we rely on your feedback to help improve Kayak. We have fewer site bugs, better features and functionality, and more accurate hotel and merchant ratings as a result.
Thanks for taking the time to write to us.
Steve Hafner
CEO and Co-founder, Kayak
We'll see if he actually responds.
In the meantime, if you feel so inclined, please send this company a letter expressing your disappointment/anger/outrage/disgust. I wrote that I felt an apology to the people of Mexico should be placed on their website. Maybe if enough people drop them a line, they will.
